Character's Full Name: Malia Tate
Canon Teen Wolf
PB/Actor: Shelley Hennig
Character's Starting Level: 5
Character Age: 17 a hotly contested age - because “What is a timeline??” But it’s just easier to go with 17.
Physical Description:
Character's Species/Race (aka human, elf, dragonblood human, etc): Werecoyote

Character History (Pre-Veil): http://teenwolf.wikia.com/wiki/Malia_Tate
Post Veil History:

When Malia arrives, at the London Eye, her blunt and slightly abrasive behavior raises all sorts of red flags for those in the area. Her insistence to see the Sheriff of London (since that’s who she assumes is in charge - she’s not doing so well on her History/Geography...) gets her sent to the hospital - where they think she’s clearly just not on her correct medication. Then thankfully, someone in the knights picks up on the abnormal mentions in her medical chart and whisks her away. When they ask her if she’s hungry, she’s very glad that she remembers to ask for Pizza and not deer.

Chosen Canon Point: Post Season 4

Personality and Psychology:

Assertive and forthright, Malia is not someone that hides their feelings or tries to make excuses for their actions. She is bold and adapts to most things by taking notice of her environment and those around her. Her directness is not out of a need to be honest, but out of a lack of understanding that not everyone appreciates honesty all of the time. Social cues and delicate topics aren’t things that she handles well, because for Malia the only influence she’s had for most of her life is the lone life of a solitary coyote. For her, the wilderness raised her and her teenage experience has been crammed into a few months where her curiosity and willingness to take bold steps has allowed her to do as much as possible, in very little time.

Being shoved into the life of a normal 17 year old girl is not something that she’s comfortable with. Learning the rules and expectations give her a steep learning curve and add in the thought of shoving an unprepared student into a grade level far higher than her actual education - simply stacks on top of that. It’s easy to say that Malia is just trying to keep her head above water.

However, despite these hard-knock situations, Malia is shown to be persistent and eager to learn. She asks for help when she needs it, instead of just letting her questions go unanswered and when she’s told that she’s doing something wrong she isn’t one to make excuses. Instead she takes each chance she has as a learning experience. Asking for Lydia’s notes, seeking Scott’s guidance for all things “were” related, and picking up on the correct behaviors from Stiles are all methods of her trying to adapt to what she is meant to be her life.

Her concept of what a family is has been broken. Being so young when her werecoyote side came out, she had no real way of managing with the level of chaos that could throw into her life. Not only did it throw a huge change into her life (the werecoyote part), but it’s that very drastic change that took the life of her mother and sister. The car crash that happened, because of her transformation became a focal point for Malia’s transformation. It made her feel like less of a person, because she could be viewed as this ‘creature’ that caused her family to die. This level of guilt trapped her in her coyote form and created a unique situation where she only survived by being a coyote. Not a werecoyote - but just a coyote. The rules of the animal world guided her, so the thought of protecting someone that had been hurt was unheard of. Looking out for someone other than yourself seemed like a foolish way to get yourself killed - but as a 17 year old girl Malia learns to adapt to this new life in the same way she adapted to life as a coyote.

Adapting takes time and it takes her accepting that she needs to be okay with being a werecoyote which includes being a girl most of the time. She checks herself into the mental institution (which is a horrible representation of mental health on that show) in some hope of figuring out of it’s something in her head that’s stopping her from transforming or if it’s beyond that. The thought that she has enough common sense to recognize what could be something in her head is a large leap for someone who was a coyote for most of her childhood, but the series creator probably just hopes we don’t think too much about that.

However, she realizes that now that she’s a girl - and not a coyote - she has a chance to experience things that she hasn’t gotten to yet and that might mean that there’s something worthwhile in living as a girl instead of a coyote. So, Malia leaves the institution in hopes of
finding out if she can find that worthwhile goal - and learn how to do all those were things that she wants back so desperately.

She latches onto Stiles, who she met in the institution, because he gives her that first spark of what it’s like to be a 17 year old girl with her first kiss and first sexual encounter. It’s a bit fast for a girl who had been a coyote a few weeks earlier, but it gives her something to focus on that isn’t her feeling like she doesn’t know how to be around other people. Stiles becomes Malia’s “person” the one that is guiding her through being a 17 year old and also giving her those moments of contact that a pack animal can survive with. He makes her feel normal, despite all of the completely not-normal things she says and does. Serving as her anchor, Malia knows that she trusts him - even when he does things she doesn’t understand.

One of those things was hiding the fact that she’s Peter Hales’ daughter from her. He thought that he was doing her a favor, protecting her from the negative side of what those with powers/abilities can do (and let’s face it Peter isn’t the shining example of a father either.) When faced with the truth, Malia’s world goes slightly askew. The person she had been looking to for guidance as to what is wrong and what is right had been lying to her. However, Malia hasn’t been living with an entire childhood of being hurt by people and so this takes a unique turn for her. She forgives him, but also ensures that she’ll make her own choices about Peter and what his roles should be in her life. Thankfully for all involved, Peter’s own plans and crazed ideals are his own undoing and Malia doesn’t have very far to go in order to see just how little she wants to have him in her life.

As Malia adapts she becomes far more logical and practical than the rest of her friends. She looks at things from the purely the facts and without emotional attachment. When the Dead Pool lists her at a value of 4 Million, Malia isn’t concerned for her well-being, because there are higher values ahead of her and they’ll go after the ones that will earn them the most money before they come for her. She’s finding her own way of adapting and marking out her course. Most of all she’s trying to find where she fits within the new pack that she’s surrounded herself and try to be of value - without creating problems.

Basically - she’s the Anya of Teen Wolf. Cute, adorable, used to be a creature and now she’s a 17 year old girl just trying to pass algebra and have a boyfriend.

Memories Retained or Lost: Malia remembers it allllllll.

Powers and Abilities: Malia is a werecoyote.

Enhanced strength, speed, reflexes, & her five senses are enhanced.

She still does not have complete control over her were-side during a full moon and has not learned how to complete a full shift back to a coyote - but she is capable of such a thing.

Any other important information (including special inventory items in their possession):

She’ll be showing up on her way to school (post having dinner with Sheriff Stilinski where they’d left Stiles handcuffed to the desk in the Sheriff’s office.) She will have her backpack with all of her school work and normal school-items.

Why do you think this character would join/work with the Knights?

Once again, Malia will be in a situation where she’ll have to adapt. The only person that will know her is going to be Liam and that’s not the most comforting thing when you’re still struggling to hold yourself to control on a full moon. With everyone being from the past, Malia will have to learn how to keep her mouth shut and what better way to keep quiet than with training! It’s something that Malia is good at, because it relies on instincts and physical skills that she has. She’ll need to adapt to this world and she’ll need to rely on someone - which is why having a mentor will be a good thing. (I vote Cora. LOL) She’ll also want to be close to people that she knows and trusts - even if they don’t know her.
